Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is this investigation about?
Pesek Law and Trial Lawyers for Justice are investigating potential legal claims involving former youth at YRTC-Kearney following the release of a July 2026 report by the Office of Inspector General of Nebraska Child Welfare.
The government report examined dozens of allegations involving sexual abuse, harassment, inappropriate touching, inappropriate relationships, and violations of professional boundaries between staff and youth.
Our legal investigation is separate from the government’s investigation.
Who should contact the legal team?
We particularly want to hear from people who are 25 years old or younger today and were held at YRTC-Kearney.
We also want to hear from people who witnessed inappropriate conduct, have information about what occurred at the facility, or are family members of former youth and have relevant information.
What if I am not sure whether what happened to me was abuse?
You do not have to make that determination yourself.
If something happened with a staff member that made you uncomfortable, involved sexual or inappropriate behavior, or crossed boundaries that you believe should have existed between a staff member and a youth, you can speak with the legal team about what happened.
What if I do not remember the exact date?
You can still contact us.
You do not need to remember every date, name, or detail before scheduling a consultation. Tell us what you remember, and the legal team can determine what additional information may be available.
What if I already reported what happened?
You can still contact us.
It does not matter whether you previously reported the conduct to YRTC staff, law enforcement, a counselor, a family member, another government agency, or anyone else.
A prior report does not prevent you from speaking with the legal team about your legal rights.
What if I witnessed something but it did not happen to me?
We still want to hear from you.
Witnesses and other people with information may help the legal team better understand what occurred at YRTC-Kearney.
Can a parent or family member contact the legal team?
Yes.
If you are a parent, guardian, or family member of someone who was at YRTC-Kearney and you have information or concerns about something that may have happened there, you may contact the legal team.
Is the consultation confidential?
The purpose of the consultation is to allow you to speak privately with the legal team about what happened.
You should not provide detailed or sensitive information through an unsecured website form. The consultation process will provide an appropriate way to discuss the details of your experience with the legal team.
Does scheduling a consultation mean I have a case?
Every person’s circumstances are different. Scheduling a consultation gives the legal team an opportunity to learn what happened and determine whether additional investigation may be appropriate.
It does not guarantee that either law firm will accept your case or that a lawsuit will be filed.
Do I have to hire a lawyer if I schedule a consultation?
No.
Scheduling a consultation does not require you to hire Pesek Law or Trial Lawyers for Justice.
Is there a deadline to contact the legal team?
We are not announcing a deadline for contacting the legal team through this website.
However, legal claims can be subject to deadlines established by law. Waiting may affect your legal rights, so if you believe this investigation may involve you, you should consider speaking with the legal team.
What happens after I contact you?
ou will have an opportunity to speak with a member of the consultation team about what happened and provide the information you remember.
The legal team will review that information and determine whether additional investigation or follow-up is appropriate.
